I was tasked with designing a pilot boat that would safelytransfer pilots to large ships. The work boat needed to bedesigned with ample visibility as well as safetyequipment. Equipment in the boat included generators, anHVAC system, a fresh water and black water system, anAC and DC electrical system, a kitchen, and a head. I sizedthe engine and transmission package for the boat whilecalculating appropriate shaft, rudder, and strut sizes. Inaddition, I calculated the forces on the hull and designedan interior structure to support the harsh loadingconditions of the ocean.
After running a CFD, I got a required horsepower for the engines. I then selected a desired engine and transmission to propel the boat at 36 knots. With the model numbers for the engine and transmission, I reached out to the manufacturers to get a 3D model of the equipment to place in the boat.
